The phoenix is a mythical sacred firebird in ancient Egyptian, Phoenician and Greek mythologies.
It has a tail of beautiful plumage and has a 500 to 1,000 year life cycle. Near the end of its life cyle the bird ignites itself and it burns to ashes along with its nest. It is reduced to ashes from which a new phoenix egg arises and lives again.
The phoenix is considered a symbol of fire and divinity.
Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, is associated with that mythical bird because it has been destroyed and rebuilt again 7 times during its history.
